Samsung to extend Android OS updates to 3 Galaxy generations


Samsung will guarantee three generations of Android operating system (OS) updates for Galaxy smartphones.



Samsung on Tuesday said it will offer extended software upgrades for its Galaxy smartphones for up to three device generations as the company aims to improve its after-sales support.

It will cover Galaxy S10 and newer smartphones, some Galaxy A series handsets and Galaxy Tab S series tablets.



"Samsung is committed to supporting our users to fully enjoy the latest mobile experiences while they are using Galaxy devices," said Janghyun Yoon, SVP and Head of Software Platform Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics.



As people hold onto their devices for longer, Samsuing said it is working to bring secure protection and exciting new features to the devices already in their hands. 



"By supporting up to three generations of Android OS upgrade, we are extending the lifecycle of our Galaxy products and making a promise that we will provide a simple and secure mobile experience that takes advantage of the latest innovations as soon as they are available." 



Users of the Galaxy S20 series that was launched in February, for instance, can get support for three OS upgrades starting with Android 11.



The Galaxy S20 line-up will also be the first Galaxy devices to receive the Android 11 upgrade later this year, with other devices to follow shortly thereafter.



Samsung said it is continuously working with global partners to deliver up-to-date mobile experiences to its Galaxy device users.

American chipmaker Qualcomm has unveiled Quick Charge 5, touted to be the world's first 100W+ fast charging solution for smartphones which promises to charge the device from 0-50 percent in just five minutes.





“Quick Charge 5, our fastest and most versatile charging solution, will enable consumers to enjoy their devices for longer periods of time, without worrying about the time required to recharge. We are proud to expand our technology portfolio and make accessible 100W+ charging a commercial reality,” Ev Roach, VP Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc said.





Quick Charge 5 is 70 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 4 and offers 10 times the power delivery of Quick Charge. This solution supports 2S batteries and 20 Volts of power delivery. 





Quick Charge 5 sets a new standard for charging performance by charging up to four times faster than the previous generation. While Quick Charge 5 charges devices at blazing fast speeds, it also keeps extreme safety measures in mind; Quick Charge 5 incorporates 12 separate voltage, current and temperature protections, including USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V. It also runs 10 degrees Celsius cooler than Quick Charge 4. Quick Charge 5 enables Dual/Triple Charge technology, adaptive input voltage, INOV4, Qualcomm Battery Saver and the new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology, which work together to maximize power transfer efficiency, increase safety and help extend the battery life cycle on a users’ device, the company said.





Quick Charge 5 is currently sampling with customers and is expected to appear in commercial devices in Q3 2020. Quick Charge 5 is supported on Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and future premium- and high-tier Snapdragon mobile platforms.

Apple is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series which would include two premium variants.





Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new iMac, AirPods Studio, HomePod 2 and HomePod Mini on August 19, followed by unveiling the iPhone 12 line, iPad, Apple Watch Series 6 and AirTags on September 8.





According to well-known leakers iHacktu Pro and Komiya, the Cupertino-based tech giant may also showcase Apple Silicon MacBook and MacBook Pro 13-inch, iPad Pro and Apple TV 4K on October 27.





The company is also expected to unveil a renewed AirPower charging mat, and smaller wireless charger AirPower Mini, as well as AR based Apple Glass.





Some earlier reports claimed that Apple may launch LTE iPhone 12 models in October while 5G models will follow in November.





Jon Prosser, a reliable Apple insider, said there is a possibility that a later iPhone 12 launch event could allow more people to attend in person.





A late launch would give the Cupertino-based tech giant time to reopen more stores in different markets that are closed due to pandemic.

As per the report, the new touch-integrated OLEDs will be supplied by Samsung Display. 

Apple is reportedly planning to bring touch-integrated OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays on all iPhone models that will be launched next year.



The Cupertino-based tech giant has placed orders for the touch-integrated OLED display panels, reports South Korea-based ET News.

The OLED panels, instead of having touch sensor films, come with inbuilt touch sensors, which will make smartphones thinner. In addition, the cost of the devices will decrease. As per the report, the new touch-integrated OLEDs will be supplied by Samsung Display.


The iPhone maker is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series in September which would include two premium variants.



The iPhone 12 Pro will come in 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch sizes. The rear camera module on the device will house four sensors with a LiDAR scanner which was introduced in the recently launched Apple iPad Pro.All four iPhone models are expected to feature OLED displays and 5G support, as famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously claimed.

"Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened," Dorsey tweeted after Twitter accounts of major public figures including US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Apple and Uber were simultaneously hacked by attackers to spread a cryptocurrency scam.





Twitter shares were down 3.3 per cent after the news, wiping out more than $1 billion from the its market cap.


"We're diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened," said Dorsey.


Twitter later said that they detected what "we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools". 





"We know they used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf. We're looking into what other malicious activity they may have conducted or information they may have accessed and will share more here as we have it," it added.
