Stuart Broad becomes 2nd England player to claim 500 wickets in Test cricket

Stuart Broad becomes 2nd England player to claim 500 wickets in Test cricket

Broad, who was just a wicket shy of the landmark heading into Day 5 of the third Test, caught Caribbean opener Kraigg Brathwaite (19) leg before wicket to reach the milestone.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad scripted history on Tuesday by becoming the second player from his country after pacer James Anderson to grab 500 wickets in the longest format of the game.

The 34-year-old achieved the feat on the fifth and final day of the series-deciding Test against the West Indies at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester.

\ Broad, who was just a wicket shy of the landmark heading into Day 5 of the third Test, caught Caribbean opener Kraigg Brathwaite (19) leg before wicket to reach the milestone.

As a result, Broad became the second England pacer after James Anderson to reach the tally of 500 wickets in the Test cricket.

Interestingly, Brathwaite was also Anderson's 500th Test victim during England's Test match against the West Indies at Lord's in 2017.

Overall, Broad became the seventh player to achieve the mark after Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets), Shane Warne (708), Anil Kumble (619), Anderson (589), Glenn McGrath (563) and Courtney Walsh (519).

Broad, who is appearing for his 140th Test match for the national side, was earlier controversially dropped during his side's four-wicket defeat at the hands of the West Indies in the opening Test at the Rose Bowl Cricket Ground in Southamptom.

At the time of filing of this report, West Indies were reduced to 84-5 in their second innings before Lunch, still needing 315 runs to win the third Test against England.

IPL 2020 from September 19 in the UAE : says IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel

IPL 2020: This means after the postponement of the T20 World Cup in Australia, BCCI has chalked out a 51-day window for IPL, the same as last year, ruling out more double-headers.

The postponed edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to be held in the UAE will begin on September 19, with the final to be played on November 8. IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed the schedule on Friday, although the Indian board is still awaiting a green signal from the government for taking IPL out of India.

“We have written to the Indian government. We are expecting a reply soon. Once it comes in, an IPL governing council meeting will be called next week to finalise all the other details.”

IPL 2020 Full Coverage

This means after the postponement of the T20 World Cup in Australia, BCCI has chalked out a 51-day window for IPL, the same as last year, ruling out more double-headers. Having two matches on the same day has become a bone of contention with the broadcasters, who are not able to leverage the afternoon matches the same way as the late evening fixtures. Even when the double-headers are scheduled, they are reserved for weekends. The same formula will be applied when the schedule is finally given shape.

When the governing council meets next week, it will have other decisions to take, whether the home and away format can be retained this year or not. There are three venues in the UAE–Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai--where matches can be staged. Dubai itself has two grounds; apart from the main stadium, there is also the ICC academy ground where T20 internationals of Associate Nations have been staged. Also, the modalities of expenditure, how much would be borne by the franchises and by the board will have to be finalised. “All these issues will be decided by the governing council,” Patel said.

The meeting will also decide if IPL-13 can have limited crowds, now that the coronavirus health situation is a lot better there. “We will seek the advice of the UAE government, if we can have any crowds,” he said.

It is expected that with every team needing at least a month to train, the franchises will be leaving base by August 20, which gives them exactly four-weeks to prepare.

The blueprint for conducting IPL 2020, revamped domestic schedule and international tours in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic among 11-point agenda in Friday's BCCI apex council meeting.

The blueprint to conduct the Indian Premier League (IPL) amidst rising cases of coronavirus will be topmost on the agenda of BCCI's Apex Council, which will meet virtually on Friday.

11-point Agenda

1) IPL- Way forward

2) Domestic cricket schedules

3) FTP- Rescheduling of the England home series for February, 2021

4) Tax exemption certificates mandatory for hosting the T20 World Cup in India

5) NCA facility in Bengaluru

6) Extension of contract for BCCI & IPL digital platforms

7) Bihar Cricket Association's administrative mess

8) Appointment of new staff in the BCCI

9) Procedure to appoint new CEO after Rahul Johri's resignation

10) Payments to NE states

11) Discussion on Tender for Apparel Partnership. Among the

11-point agenda, which is in possession of PTI, is a discussion on domestic cricket season, which is likely to be a curtailed one considering the rapidly rising Covid-19 caseload in the country. The third point covers rejigging the Futures Tours & Programme (FTP) of the men's cricket team with three series (away white ball tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe and home series vs England) already canceled. The team last played in March.

The Council will also discuss the way forward for the IPL, which stands indefinitely postponed due to the health crisis. The BCCI has zeroed in on a September-early November window for the league.

"Obviously, all options need to be explored. First option is India but you don't how the situation will be. Obviously, there is UAE and Sri Lanka but taking out the IPL will increase the overheads. I think the president also recently said that," a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

"I don't think we are still in a position to fix venues in a situation which is so fluid. But the plans and the tentative window needs to be ready so that once ICC makes a formal announcement of T20 World Cup (scheduled for October-November) cancellation next week, we can proceed," the official said.

With ICC Board Meeting scheduled next Monday, the issue of getting tax exemption certificate from the government in order to host the 2021 T20 World Cup is also high on agenda.

The tax exemption for the ICC events has been a bone of contention and BCCI has been given time till December to get the necessary clearances from the central government. As far as India's FTP is concerned, the agenda states that the September white-ball series versus England could be rescheduled in February following the Test series. In case BCCI wants to squeeze in the white ball games, it could well mean that the five-Test series would be curtailed to include six white ball games (3 ODIs and 3 T20Is).The postponed white ball tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe also needs to be rescheduled.

One of the biggest headache for BCCI is country's domestic structure which includes, senior men, U-23 men, junior boys (U-19 and U-16), senior women, U-23 women and U-19 girls, constituting thousands of matches across formats."Obviously, the Ranji Trophy schedule needs to be tweaked. We need to discuss whether we can have Vijay Hazare, Duleep Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali in one go."May be we have to let go one of the tournaments as considerable time would be lost. We have to fit in the junior domestic events," said the official.

Another major issue will be apparel sponsorship as the Nike deal has come to an end. It is expected that BCCI will follow the process of inviting tenders from potential bidders.

Some of the other issues include discussions on Rahul Johri's replacement for CEO's post, grants and subsidies to North Eastern states, NCA operations, recruitment of BCCI staff and administrative mess in Bihar Cricket Association.

Tom Moody's warning to Virat Kohli, if not done then you can lose 3 years of career

Virat Kohli Philhat captains Team India in all three formats, Tom Moody believes that this increases the pressure on Virat.

Virat Kohli is considered the best batsman in the world today. Not only this, Captain Kohli of Team India is also counted among the best captains of the cricket world. At present, Virat is captaining the Indian team in all three formats. Despite being the captain, Virat's performance as a batsman has not declined in any way.

Today Virat is the only batsman in this game whose average is more than 50 in all three formats. While Virat's average in Test cricket is 53.63, his average in ODIs and T20s is 59.34 and 50.80. Despite all this, former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody has advised the Indian selectors to appoint different captains in all three formats of the game. Moody has said in cautionary words that if Virat continues to be the captain of the Indian team in every format, he will lose 2-3 important years of his career.

Tom Moody, while speaking to a sports website, expressed his views on the subject and said, 'Captaining in India has a different pressure to captain in all three formats of cricket. He said that if India is worried about the impact on Virat Kohli's career in international cricket, then every format or different captaincy or split captaincy can be considered. If Virat Kohli continues to captain the three formats of cricket, there is a possibility that he may lose 2 to 3 years of his international career.

Moody claimed that the biggest advantage of split captaincy would be for Virat as he would lose some weight from his shoulders and in that case he would be able to focus on his batting more than before. Doing so will not only benefit Virat's batting, but will also improve the performance of the Indian team. Moody said about this, 'Split captaincy makes a difference. Eoin Morgan is not a Test player but he used to play Test first. But now he is not known as a Test player, he is considered a specialist of white ball cricket, so it works for him quite easily.
